History behind Father's Day
Father's Day originated from the USA, specifically Washington in 1910 after the success of Mother's Day. Sonora Smart Dodd was the founder when she was sat in church listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Her mother had died during childbirth, so her father took the heavy responsibility and single handedly raised her from a newborn child along with his other five children. Sonora decided she wanted to designate a day for her dad.
The following year she petitioned for the holiday to be recognised in her city of Spokane, Washington. Young women would hand out red roses to their fathers during church services in Spokane. It took a while for Father's Day to be legally recognised, but thanks to Sonora's belief and passion for the day it steadily gained popularity. in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge expressed his support for establishing a closer relations between father's and their children. Father's Day is now a worldwide loved and celebrated holiday.
